How Often Should I Replace My Air Filters?

Expect to replace your AC’s air filter every one to three months. The frequency depends on the strength of the filter and how often you run your AC.

What’s the Ideal Thermostat Setting During Pittsburgh Summers?

We recommend 78°F on the thermostat. Most people will find this setting comfortable if they have on light clothing. If this temperature seems too hot, lower the thermostat several degrees and then raise it by one degree per day until you become comfortable with 78°F.

Why Is My Air Conditioner Blowing Warm Air?

This could be due to multiple problems. Check the thermostat to make sure it isn’t on "fan only" mode. Then see if the filter is clogged and needs replacement. Look around the outdoor cabinet to see if there are obstructions. If the issue continues, you probably need AC technicians to diagnose the problem, which could be leaking refrigerant, a broken compressor, a frozen evaporator coil, or a dirty condenser coil.

How Do I Know If My AC Needs Repairs or a Replacement?

When an air conditioner is more than 15 years old, we strongly recommend having it replaced when it starts to malfunction. It’s not worth putting money into repairs at that point. For an AC that’s younger, consider the cost of the repair against the cost of a new unit: if the repair is more than half the cost of the replacement, the replacement is the better option. You can always consult the team at Boehmer Heating & Cooling for a professional opinion.

What Are the Benefits of a High-Efficiency Air Conditioner?

A high-efficiency air conditioning system can significantly reduce your cooling costs over its service life. High-efficiency ACs often have more even cooling with fewer temperature fluctuations and run quieter. They do cost more to purchase, so always work with professionals to ensure you make the right choice of unit.

How Long Should an Air Conditioner Typically Last?

The typical service life of a central AC is 10–15 years. This number will drop if the air conditioner doesn’t receive annual maintenance or has neglected repairs.

What Is the Difference Between Central ACs and Ductless Systems?

Central ACs are split systems with an outdoor condenser and an indoor evaporator connected to a blower. The blower sends the cooled air from the evaporator into a network of ducts that carry the air to the rooms. A ductless system also has an outdoor condenser, but it’s a mini split system, which means that it connects to several mini air handlers and evaporator units around the house. These air handlers are mounted on the walls and blow conditioned air directly into the living spaces without needing ductwork.
