Is Your Air Filter Ready for Allergy Season?

Allergy sufferers know that at this time of year as the temperature rises, so do pollen counts. While the flora and fauna releasing the pollen are outside, it isn’t hard for allergens to get inside and into your HVAC system. A great way to drastically reduce allergens from swirling around your home with your forced air system is to use a mechanical air filter. It is true that your HVAC comes with a standard air filter, but this air filter’s job is not to improve your indoor air quality; it is to keep large particles of dirt and dust from coating your HVAC system. If you want a mechanical air filter that will help your allergies, the experts at Boehmer Heating & Cooling can help. Just give us a call, and we’ll schedule you an appointment.

Make Sure You Have the Right MERV Rating

Mechanical air filters come with a rating that tells you how effective it is for capturing contaminants. This rating is known as MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value), and to effectively remove allergens from your home, you want a filter with a MERV rating between 7-12. Why? Particles have different sizes, and allergens tend to range around the 5 micron size. To capture these particles, you want to ensure that the weave of the fabric in the mechanical filter is tight enough to do so, and MERV will tell you this.

Changing Your Filter Regularly

If you have already upgraded your system’s air filter to more effectively capture allergens, then it is vitally important for both your indoor air quality and your HVAC  system to change the filter every 3 months. Air filters become clogged very quickly, and allowing yours to become clogged will restrict the air flow in your system while also rendering the air filter useless against capturing allergens.
