It’s a recent advancement in home cooling and heating technology, but it’s been around long enough for engineers and technicians to perfect the manufacturing and installation process. Geothermal heating and cooling allows you to have efficient heating and air conditioning that lasts for decades to come. If you’re in the market for a new home heating and cooling system, either for a new home or an existing one, consider geothermal!
It Works Like a Bit Like a Standard Heat Pump
A heat pump is a heating and cooling system in one. It uses a refrigerant that is able to absorb heat from the air inside of your home during the cooling process. Then it releases that heat outside in order to cool down the home. During the heating season, it reverses, absorbing heat from the outside air to bring indoors.
Heat pumps are highly efficient because they move heat instead of generating it. The problem is that they rely on the temperature of the outdoor air to work, which can fluctuate quite a bit. The unpredictable climate takes away from efficiency, and leads to stress on the system that wears it down faster. Geothermal systems use similar technology, but a bit differently.
The Underground Loop System
Instead of removing heat from the air (in the winter) and depositing heat to the outside air (in the summer), a geothermal heat pump moves heat to and from the ground. When you dig far enough into the earth, you’ll eventually reach a point where the temperature stays relatively stable most of the year.
An underground loop system is installed in your yard as part of geothermal installation, in order to move a heat transfer fluid down and absorb heat—or as a place to release heat in the winter. The heat available underground starts a thermodynamic process to heat or cool your home, and this is more efficient than other systems available today. The installation is large and time-consuming, but the loop’s location underground protects it from the elements and keeps it working better for longer!
