Why Isn’t My AC Cooling?

It’s the dog days of summer, the time when you most need your air conditioner to work. It is also the common time of air conditioner malfunction and breakdown, because the hottest days are the ones during which your AC works the most. If you wake up to a warm house, or come home to one, you may be wondering: why isn’t my AC cooling? The trained AC experts at Boehmer Heating & Cooling can help you with this.

Possible Reasons for Decreased Cooling

There are a number of things that can go wrong with your air conditioning system, but these are some of the more common problems our technicians see:

Something is wrong with your thermostat.

The first place your technician will check for problems is with your home’s thermostat. Sometimes the setting can accidentally be changed, such as from cooling to heating, or the back-up batteries may have expired. Dust and dirt can affect the instrumentation and frayed or corroded wiring can affect the operation of the thermostat.

The air filter is clogged and dirty.

A clogged air filter can significantly reduce the air flow in your system. In turn, this can drop the volume of air being delivered to your home, or even stop the cooling cycle completely. If this is the issue you are dealing with, changing the air filter should remedy the problem.

There’s a refrigerant leak.

Refrigerant is the chemical in your AC system that makes the heat release/cooling process possible. Your air conditioner was made to work with an exact amount of refrigerant in order to successfully cool your home; should the level be altered by a leak in your system, you won’t get the cooling you need.
