Combat Spring Allergens at Home

Thursday, April 15th, 2021
woman-with-allergies

Did you know that your indoor air pollution can be far worse than the outdoor air pollution? Homes today are built very tightly, to allow no air to escape from your home. This is really good news for your HVAC systems—this tight construction helps those systems work as efficiently as possible. But it’s not great news for your allergies.

Since no air can escape from your home, this means that no allergens and other contaminants can get out either. This includes everything from visible pollen and dust to microorganisms, odors, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), mold and mildew, and more. Does this mean there’s nothing you can do about those contaminants and allergens? Of course not! While no single technology can reduce or eliminate contaminants in the home, there are a number of indoor air quality solutions we provide that can mitigate your exposure. Read on to learn more!

Air Conditioning Maintenance and Coronavirus: How to Stay Safe & Comfortable

Thursday, May 21st, 2020

Lives everywhere have been upended as the world reels from the coronavirus pandemic. Gatherings have beenOutdoor Cooling Unit called off, businesses have been shuttered and people are advised to stay home whenever possible. As the government continues to preach social distancing on every available screen, it is understandable that you would be wary of allowing another person into your home. However, that being said, the verity of the matter is: nobody sent a pandemic memo to your HVAC system, therefore, unfortunately, it could still break down. Preventative air conditioning maintenance is the answer; and we, on the other hand, are much more considerate than your HVAC system. At Boehmer Heating & Cooling, we’ve taken the steps to ensure your health, safety, and overall comfort in these difficult times.

As inconsiderate as it would be for your system to break down right now, these stay-at-home orders only mean longer run times and increased strain on your air conditioning system, thus maintenance has never been more crucial. Take the significant extra hours spent at home, add the soaring temperatures on the forecast, and a bonus side of allergy season to create the perfect scenario for disaster.

Fear not! Simple preventative maintenance will reduce the likelihood of untimely breakdown and repairs.

Fact: Properly maintained HVAC equipment maximizes the life expectancy of your system, $100 now could save you thousands later, not to mention the headache that comes with an unexpected breakdown or premature replacement.

Over and above the financial benefits of HVAC maintenance there are other advantages to getting ahead of the problem.

One being: it will improve the quality of the air circulated throughout your home.

The quickest and simplest way to improve your home’s air quality is to replace your furnace filter regularly; but did you know dust and debris don’t only collect on the filter? Any moving part in your system can accumulate dust, bacteria, and contaminants, meaning we could find particles inside your air ducts, the condensing unit, and even inside the furnace itself. Bad news: all of that build up gets circulated into the air you breathe, acting as a trigger for family members with allergies, asthma or other respiratory ailments.

The next being: it will reduce your energy usage and costs.

Yes, I know I said “over and above the financial” but saving money can never be ignored. Maintaining your system will ensure it’s operating at peak efficiency, bringing down the amount of energy you use and, in turn, the amount you pay for it.

Your Safety Matters

The health and safety of our customers are vital to us. That’s why in these extraordinary times, we’re taking safety precautions to ensure that we can provide the same level of service that you’ve come to expect from us without breaking the need for social distancing. Yet, the fact of the matter is, right now, your home is your only refuge, and discomfort in your only place of refuge might just take the last ounce of your sanity. One Refrigerant Myth You Should Never Believe

Monday, July 29th, 2019

refrigerant-line-behind-ac-unitOne of the most commonly asked questions from homeowners is, “how often does my refrigerant need to be refilled?”

The answer might surprise you—hopefully, never!

Your air conditioner’s refrigerant should never need to be refilled—what we refer to as recharged in the HVAC industry. This is a common misconception though, that refrigerant is something that depletes over time, similar to gasoline from a car or oil from an appliance in your household.

How does refrigerant work, and what would cause a refrigerant loss? Read on!

Some of the Unusual Movies Released for Valentine’s Day

Saturday, February 14th, 2015

Hollywood has always tried to match movies up to the seasons to draw droves of viewers to the theaters: October is packed with fright-offerings, while the winter holidays skew toward warm and pleasing family films (as well as Oscar hopefuls). Valentine’s Day falls in an odd spot when it comes to the movie release calendar, however, since February tends to be a slower time for the film industry. The studios are as likely to slot strange movies that don’t fit anywhere else in their annual schedules into the Valentine’s Day weekend as they are films with powerful romantic appeal.

So, while the second weekend of February has featured hugely successful romantic comedies like Hitch, The Wedding Singer, and (of course) Valentine’s Day, some truly weird choices have debuted in this weekend as well. And a few have even gone on to tremendous success despite the bizarre match with the holiday. Here are a couple of the odder Valentine’s Day movie releases:

  • Dracula (1931): Yes, this Halloween perennial and the start of Universal Studio’s Classic Monsters actually came out on Valentine’s Day! But perhaps this makes some sense, as the Dracula legend has often received a “doomed lover” approach in the many years since Bela Lugosi made the aristocratic vampire a screen icon.
  • The Silence of the Lambs (1991): Does any film seem less appropriate for Valentine’s Day than this unnerving and sometimes very violent psychological thriller? What’s even more astonishing than the film’s release date is that The Silence of the Lambs eventually nabbed the Oscar for Best Picture, an almost unheard of occurrence for a movie released so early in the year.
  • Daredevil (2003): This Marvel comic adaptation featuring Ben Affleck as a blind superhero does contain a romantic subplot, but the stronger connection to Valentine’s Day may just be that Daredevil wears a bright red costume.
  • A Good Day to Die Hard (2013): The least successful of the Die Hard film franchise, this is an excellent example of a studio dropping a film into a weekend where it doesn’t fit in the hopes that it works as counter-programming. (It didn’t.)
  • Wayne’s World (1992): Now here is an example of counter-programming that clicked with audiences. This comedy based on a Saturday Night Live sketch turned into one of that year’s biggest hits and spawned a sequel.

Whether you celebrate Valentine’s Day with a trip to the movie theater, or you have your own special plans, everyone here at Boehmer Heating & Cooling hopes you and your loved ones have a wonderful weekend.
